When Nastia walks in the gym, she’s just a gymnast Nastia. She’s not Olympic champion Nastia. In this gym, everybody’s the same.

I first attended camp in 2004. It was big time — we worked out with Olympians such as Carly Patterson and Courtney Kupets, and I was in awe of them. I didn’t think I belonged but still had a blast and evidently made the right impression. Camp is more fun when you’re younger; the younger girls get to see all their friends, and the last night is often like a slumber party in which everyone stays up all night and watches movies. But for the older girls, who have been coming to camp for six or seven years, ‘the party scene’ part of it that you feel when you’re 12 is mostly gone.

The depth is incredible. The problem with it is we’re going to leave a B team at home that could vie for a medal. The depth is ridiculous. I guess it’s a good problem to have.

I’m not doing it for media attention, not doing it for sponsors, not for money. It’s because you absolutely love the sport. I know I’ll never be exactly like how I was at the 2008 Olympics, that was my prime.

The Wall Street Journal has a nice write up of USA’s John Orozco, who will be competing in front of a local crowd at Madison Square Garden for the American Cup this weekend.
I loved this anecdote from when he was young:
In one of his first competitions, an older boy was being teased about a low score and started crying. After Orozco received his award, he quietly walked over and placed his medal over the boy’s head.
“Initially, we were like: Oh no! He just gave away his first gold medal!” his mother said. “You know how parents like to keep everything. But really, there’s nothing better than that.”
